"Patola Double Ikat Silk Shawl - India - Early 19th Century"
Early 19th century India Beautiful double ikat red silk shawl named Patola from India. The Ikat technique is similar to the Lyon technique of Chiné à la Branche or chain printing. In this case, this Patola is double Ikat because it concerns the warp threads and the weft threads, dyed before weaving. Repetition of geometric patterns (hearts, flowers, stars) in cream, green and ocher colors forming diamonds. Borders of stripes and geometric friezes. Gold metallic threads broached on each end of the shawl. Frieze of triangles. Very supple silk and finely woven like the earliest patolas of the 18th century. A consolidation on a border of around thirty centimeters in a corner. Otherwise no holes or stains. Good general state of conservation and color. Dimensions: 112 cm x 456 cm. Provenance: Christies London 2015 sale.
