"Holy Shroud Of Besançon In Its Frame – 18th Century"
The history of the Holy Shroud of Besançon is fascinating. From 1517 and until the Revolution, when he mysteriously disappeared, he was the object of great veneration and spectacular devotions. It was customary to return from pilgrimage with an image, like this representation of the Holy Shroud, on silk. In a gilded and nicely carved wooden frame, we find polychrome gold-spun embroidery work on a cream-colored satin background.
The faces of the bishop and the two canons are painted, as well as the red dots of the Passion on the Holy Shroud. Excellent condition for this 18th century piece.
Dimensions of 33 cm by 25.
