- The richness of this work lies in the plurality of techniques that constitute it; silk velvet as a background, needlepoint tapestry and embroidery for the patterns. The background is a solid silk velvet (today with some gaps) in a golden beige color. The patterns affixed to this background have different origins. Most of the space is occupied by floral motifs in petit point tapestry (wool) inclined to the right on stamen canvas (hemp or linen). In the interstices, to enhance the whole, other elements were added on purpose: elements of sewn trimmings (twisted silk cords), patterns made in embroidery (silk threads, flat stitches). Note the presence of an “AV” monogram in small point tapestry on each of the strips at the bottom (on the right for one, on the left for the other). This work, partially made with a reused tapestry (18th century), was designed specifically to preserve this tapestry while offering a new decorative element thanks to the later addition of motifs (19th century).
- Furthermore, the contrasts of colors and materials, and therefore of relief, give this decor a beautiful harmony. The colorful floral patterns stand out on the plain background with velvet which offers the advantage of changing shade with the slightest movement while the embroidery elements punctuate the decor with golden highlights. Between the velvet, the needlepoint tapestry, the embroidery, the whole thing has a beautiful decorative effect. -Composite work. Please note there are gaps, tears and wear in the silk velvet.
