African Tribal Art - Nzebi Mask, Bandjabi flag

Object description :

"African Tribal Art - Nzebi Mask, Bandjabi"
Belgian collection of African art.

This Nzebi style mask is distinguished by its delicate features and the vertical arrangement of its colored areas. It represented a nature spirit or ancestor, intended to facilitate communication with the supernatural world to obtain protection from the powers that reign beyond our world. The Nzebi, also known as the Bandjabis, originate from the Ogooué region, but settled mainly in southern Gabon and the Republic of Congo, particularly around Mayoko, a region abundant in iron ore. Their main secret societies include Bwiti, Mwiri and Ndjobi.
