Gaetano Ottani (or Gaetano Bernardino Ottani) as a painter trained in Bologna, at the Clementine Academy. Inspired by the works of Ferdinando Galli da Bibbiena, he commissioned decorations in the most important Piedmontese villas and palaces. He liked to depict landscapes with ruins, night visions of colonnades and marine inventions. His scenes are imaginative and rich in detail. Inspired by the taste for storytelling of Venetian origin, he creates elaborate and imposing architectures, classical or Gothic, which are enhanced by his highly developed talent as a scenographer, enough to make them go beyond the frame of the picture.
