"Elegant Bench From The End Of The 18th Century / Early 19th Century. Consulate Period. Parisian Production."
Lovely and wide antique "Greek" style bench. It dates back to the very end of the 18th century. Very "masculine and powerful" in its general appearance, it characterizes the productions at the time when Bonaparte returns to Paris and, aided by his generals, overthrows the government of the Directory, on 18 Brumaire Year VIII (November 9, 1799). This is a Parisian production. Heir to the style of the end of the last years of the reign of Louis XVI (around 1780-1790), this type of production already announces the first artistic but also political canons which asserted themselves under the Empire (1804-1815). Two massive and ornamented straight front legs, two sober saber legs at the back. Quadrangular belt with rectilinear crosspieces, slightly protruding. Hollow floral motifs and gold leaf palmettes. The bench has kept its original soft gray lacquer. Armrests with cuff. Blue velvet, almost "electric". This large sofa has a very comfortable seat. Trimmed with horsehair.
