Before 1792, each regiment ordered all types of weapons, swords, cannons, pikes, sabers, etc. at its convenience. “In 1792, the Assembly decided to reintroduce the pike into the French army and drew up specifications standardizing this weapon marked AN (Ateliers Nationnaux). This endowment is the culmination of the doctrinal reflection carried out since 1728 by the “Folardist” tactical school. The promotion of this weapon is certainly a response to the material difficulties of the army of the Revolution, but, even more, it reinforces the “popular system” which was then forged. The decision of 1792 is also the consecration of a strong symbol of sans-culotterie. Thus the pike becomes the support of a political fight for equality between active and passive citizens. However, the trial by fire was fatal to this experience which ended in Vendée. » (Renaud Faget, 2018)
