Manufacture of Jules VIEILLARD, Bordeaux, based on a decor by Eugène MILLET. Earthenware asparagus plate from the “aux Grands Oiseaux” service with polychrome enameled decoration of two birds, one in flight and the other placed on a cherry blossom brance diameter 25 cm Good condition Marks of Jules Vieillard under the background imitating the Japanese characters and numbering D.16 Second half of the 19th century. Eugène Millet (1819-1879) is an architect and decorator who was a student of Viollet-le-Duc. For the Manufacture Vieillard in Bordeaux, he created the decor for this service in a Japanese style inspired by Hokusai, reflecting the enthusiasm for Japan after the opening of the country. The earthenware from the Vieillard Manufacture is distinguished by the use of enamels in light relief and the vibrant colors that can be found on this service. Elements of the service and decorative projects executed by Millet are preserved at the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris and at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs de Design in Bordeaux.
