Trained as an architect, Yves Laloy painted geometric canvases in the 1950s. After 1955, he left Rennes and crossed North Africa by bicycle to Egypt where he was arrested on suspicion of espionage and imprisoned. Released, Yves Laloy embarks as a sailor bound for Newfoundland. He will have this word: “Stay on land: never!” Better to have your head in the air and pass for an artist." One of his works is reproduced on the cover of André Breton's book Surrealism and Painting in its 1965 edition. This figurative painting represents two fish facing each other with a play on words for the caption: “Peas are green… Little goldfish…”
