with buckle carved in light relief,
Breton Popular Folk Art, carved boxwood - Brittany 19th century.
Stylized bee (or flower?) engraved on the lid,
traces of red wax in places in the engraving,
twisted iron hinge (a little rusty and broken),
nevertheless the lid is positioned, fits and holds closed very well.
Careful engraving work (small guilloche friezes around the edges),
including on the underside (in the shape of a shoemaker's stitch).
Good used condition, very pretty original patina, soft to the touch;
note two small wood retraction fels: one at the shoe buckle, and the other at the rear.
