Object description :

"Great 19th Century Religious Painting, The Martyrdom Of Saint Andrew"
COD 10988
Antique Italian painting from the mid-19th century. Oil on canvas artwork, first canvas, depicting religious subject, Martyrdom of Saint Andrew, nineteenth-century copy in 1 to 1 scale of the masterpiece by Carlo Dolci (1616-1687) now exhibited at Palazzo Pitti in Florence. A painting with a strong visual impact that represents the moment immediately preceding the crucifixion. In fact, the saint is stripped of his clothes while the torturers arrange the wooden poles from which he will be hung. This is because Saint Andrew, according to the hagiographic story, was tied and not nailed to the decussate cross, so as not to resemble in any way the sacrifice of Jesus. The details of the work are meticulous and really well painted, in particular note the well-groomed clothing of the protagonists. Beautifully decorated carved, lacquered and gilded wooden frame. Canvas with small drops of color and signs of restoration work (see photo). Painting overall in fair state of conservation. Sight size H 122 x W 99 cm.
