Object description :

"Georges Jacob, Exceptional Stamped Swivel Armchair From The Louis XVI Period. "
A true museum piece and emblematic model of Georges Jacob, this superb mahogany armchair with rotating seat with its original canage was one of the favorites of Queen Marie-Antoinette. An identical model, in gilded wood, was referenced in the Queen's furniture at the Petit Trianon, still kept at the Palace of Versailles (Arizzoli - Clémentel, Le furniture de Versailles, Faton, T. II p. 228 et seq., n°80 .).
Another, also with identical sculptures, probably executed for the Countess du Barry, is kept in the collections of the Louvre Museum (inventory number OA.6553, see attached photo).
The latter is referenced in Ernest Dumonthier's collection, The seats of Georges Jacob, plate no. 5 (see attached photo).

This typical Georges Jacob armchair is a seat combining the Louis XV arched legs and the more rectilinear structure of the Louis XVI backrest.
The round belt with a frieze of vertical channels as well as the retracted arch armrest consoles finished in acanthus leaf are typically of neoclassical inspiration.
The clearance at the armrests allowed officers to sit with a sword attached to their belt.
This luxurious model is entirely sculpted, probably by Jean-Baptiste Rode (1735-1799), Georges Jacob's official sculptor.
Its backrest is entirely set with a frieze of stylized bases, followed by a frieze of interlacing under the armrests and in the extension of the seat. The latter, circular, sculpted with denticles and ribbon, accommodates four connecting dice finely sculpted with an acanthus leaf.
Followed by superb legs in inverted consoles with scrolls (invention of Georges Jacob), ribbon and acanthus leaf, giving this seat a slender and elegant aesthetic.

Original canework in good condition, unrestored. Rotating seat system in perfect working order, previously restored.
The reinforced pad and the armrest cuffs are trimmed with horsehair and very good quality brown leather.

Georges Jacob (1739-1814):
"Georges JACOB was, without a doubt, the greatest French seat manufacturer of all time. No one has produced it anymore, no one has produced better. No one knew how, like him, to create, innovate, find new ideas; few had the same sense of balance, grace, proportions and nobility of lines, Georges JACOB is a great artist." Jean Nicolay - The art and manner of French master cabinetmakers in the 18th century

Georges Jacob, the founder of the line, who came from Burgundy, attained mastery as a seat carpenter in 1765, after an apprenticeship with Louis Delanois, another great master of seat carpentry from the mid-18th century.
From 1773, he worked for the Garde Meuble de la Couronne, this collaboration was only interrupted by the Revolution. His clientele is the most brilliant, Queen Marie Antoinette, the King and the royal family, the Count of Provence, future Louis XVIII, the Count of Artois, future Charles X, the Prince of Condé, the Duke of Penthièvre and the courts foreign.
