"17th Century Provencal Or Languedocian School : “joyful Crowd”"
Provencal or Languedoc school 17th century: “Jubilant crowd”, large pen drawing enhanced with bistre and sepia wash and white gouache 27 x 41 cm, mounted with a neutral pH mat and “museum” glass in a beautiful old frame with slightly worn gilding 46 x 57 cm. Characteristic of this school which finds its roots in the Caravaggesque painters of the previous century and which established itself throughout the South of France, from Provence to Puy and to Toulouse via Languedoc. Our large sheet of unidentified subject, perhaps an episode from the Exodus, teems with life with its characters hugging each other and carrying a sheep certainly intended for sacrifice. The nervous touch, reinforced with small angular pen strokes and highlighted by white gouache, indicates the hand of a Master whose identity could have been revealed by a signature in a reserve on the rock at the bottom left if it were not had not been scratched!..
