Old label on the back: Galerie Druet 20 rue Royale Paris “Jules Flandrin - Dauphiné”. This gallery was founded in 1903 by Eugène Druet. Druet was previously Rodin's photographer, his gallery had among its clientele rich collectors like Ivan Morosov. Druet presented many major artists, including: Charles Camoin, Odillon Redon, Camille Manzana -Pissaro, Albert Marquet, Maurice Denis, Paul Cezanne, Léon Lehmann. After the death of Eugène Druet, the gallery was managed by his wife until its closure in 1938.

This work by Flandrin was probably presented during the exhibition dedicated to this artist which took place from December 1 to 13, 1913, paintings by Flandrin were also present during the group exhibition from February 9 to 21, 1914, alongside works by Marquet, Rouault, Dufresnoy, Marval and Guerin.

Jules Léon Flandrin is a French painter (1871-1947) born in Corenc, not far from Grenoble. Student of Gustave Moreau at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, in the “Fauves” promotion, alongside Marquet and Matisse. He exhibited in 1897 at the Salon du Champs de Mars, then participated in numerous international exhibitions in England, Germany and Switzerland. He will become, at a very young age, a member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, then a member of the Salon d'Automne, he will also be at the start of his career the companion of the artist Jacqueline Marval. He was awarded the Legion of Honor, his works are in the collections of several French museums, notably in Grenoble, Chambéry and Gray, but also abroad in Japan and the United States.
