17th century - France
French Renaissance furniture is directly inspired by the decorative arts of the Italian quattrocento born in the 15th century. The extreme richness of the beautiful wood sculptures characterizes this new French style with still stiff forms. Carpenters, sculptors and architects borrowed its varied ornamentations from Antiquity. The shapes take up the architectural elements of the column, pilaster, cornice and pediment. Arabesques, foliage and bas-relief medallions with mythological, religious scenes or portraits cover the facades and uprights of French Renaissance furniture
