Pierre Chapo (1927-1987) is a French furniture designer who fell in love with wood after meeting a shipwright.
Enrolled at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1947, he made many trips to Scandinavian countries, the United States and Central America during his studies. On his return to France, he creates his workshop and continues his work of wood, oak, ash and elm.
In 1957, he opened his gallery in Paris where he exhibited his creations as well as those of Serge Mouille, Isamu Noguchi or Charlotte Perriand. He will create the bed «Godot» for Samuel Beckett.
He will also work with the Seltz family, cabinetmakers in the Vosges.
Throughout his career he will combine contemporary design and traditional crafts, to offer us pure and organic creations.
In 1960, he received the gold medal at the Arts et Techniques de l'Artisanat exhibition organized by the city of Paris.
In 1967, he won the bronze medal at the Salon des Artistes Décorateurs.
Towards the end of his life, he will give a series of lectures on wood, cabinetmaking, tradition and creation.
