Oil On Canvas "The Beach" signed Lower Right Cara Costea (1925-2006) Artist: Philippe Cara Costea Dimensions (mm): 920x730

Philippe Cara Costea completed his secondary studies at Stanislas College in Paris before entering the Paris School of Fine Arts, then the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, in the studio of Émile Othon Friesz. In 1947, he left for Tahiti in the footsteps of Paul Gauguin, in the company of his friend with whom he attended Stanislas College, the painter Philippe Lejeune who would become the founder of the École d'Étampes. He obtained a state scholarship in 1955.
In addition to numerous exhibitions in France (he is, with Georges Feher, Alain Mongrenier and Jacques Van den Bussche, one of the permanent artists of the Jean-Claude Bellier gallery), he is also present abroad: Lausanne, Tunis, New York Coliseum, San Francisco, Cologne, Brussels. Located at 31, rue Galande in Paris3, it is a member of all the major national fairs: Salon d'Automne, Salon des Artistes Français, Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts, Salon d'Angers, Salon du Dessin et de la water-based paint, Salon de la Jeune Peinture, Salon Comparisons, etc.
Selected for the Drouant-David Prize for Young Painting in 1952 and for the Othon-Friesz Prize in 1958, he won the Camille-Renault Prize (1953), the Charles-Morellet Prize (1954)4, the Painting Club Prize , the gold medal at the Salon of French Artists (1978, 1988), the prize of the Academy of Fine Arts (1988), the Grand Prix Baudry (Taylor Foundation, 1996), and the gold medal of the Salon de Montmorency (1983).
Greenery, Marines, Groups where he often represented himself, Orchestras inspired by a violinist friend in a French orchestra, Cathedrals, mainly with Sainte-Croix d'Orléans, Female nudes in painting and screen printing, lithography and pastel.

In the field of screen printing, Cara-Costea initiates and organizes, within the artists' association Jeune Peinture, the publication under the title of Original Screen Prints of a series of five issues (limited prints and numbered copies) which appear between 1949 and 1953, each issue being created on a theme, successively: Io, the cow-horned virgin, Mothers, Job, Self-portraits, and Death. Cara-Costea, leader of this bibliophilic publication5, joins Paul Aïzpiri, Nicolas Carrega, Roger Chastel, Antoni Clavé, Paul Collomb, Gabriel Dauchot, Édouard Goerg, Jean Jansem, Philippe Lejeune, Bernard Lorjou, André Minaux, Orlando Pelayo , Paul Rebeyrolle, Gaëtan de Rosnay, Claude Roederer, Claude Schurr, Jean Souverbie and Jacques Yankel6.
As a lithographer, Cara-Costea illustrates the work of poems Belle chair by Émile Verhaeren7. His work in sculpture includes numerous female nudes, in wood and plaster, in particular a woman giving birth alone, and a child's head in bronze.
He created four monumental works for his town of Méréville8 91660:
For the Hubert Robert de Méréville college, a bas-relief from 1976 represents a group of children playing, hollowed out on the surrounding wall, facing the cemetery where he rests. For the Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens church in Méréville, in 1970 he created the large six-meter cross hollow-carved in an Iroko trunk weighing more than a ton and fourteen semi-circular stained glass windows representing the life of Christ (inspired by the Mysteries of the Rosary). The first two were made in 1942 under the Occupation and without the help of a workshop. The rest of the work (1998) followed the installation of the large cross, carried out after the fire of 1959 which required the restoration of the Romanesque building.
The fourteen stations of the Stations of the Cross in negative, that is to say hollow on a steel plate (inspired by the Passion of Good Friday), were completed after his death by the friends of the association he was founded in 1990.
