Beautiful oil on Canva, work of the English school of the entourage of Benjamin West.
This oil on canvas represents a biblical scene. The witch of Endor calls the recently deceased prophet Samuel at the request of Saul, king of Israel. Saul wanted to contact the dead to help him in the face of danger and to learn about the prophecy. Samuel, furious, announces the imminent fall of King Saul and his kingdom and dies a few days later.
Expertise on canvas by the Turquin firm.
The back of the painting bears a label (19th century) mentioning the attribution to Fragonard by Prosper de Baudicour and to Subleyras by Féral. An earlier attribution had been written on the back of the canvas attributing the painting to Pierre de Cortone.
This subject was particularly illustrated in England in the second half of the 18th century by John Hamilton Mortimer, Benjamin West and William Blake.
