Object description :

"African Tribal Art - Dogon Altar Figure"
Former Guy Mercier African art collection.

Most of the time, Dogon statues are carved to order by a specific family, but they can also become the object of worship for the entire community. However, their exact functions remain largely unknown. In parallel with Islam, the religion of the Dogon is characterized by four main cults: the Lébé, which concerns fertility and is led by the Hogon, the Wagem, dedicated to the worship of ancestors under the authority of the patriarch, the Binou, which invokes the spirit world and is led by the Binou priest, and finally the society of masks, which plays a role in funeral rituals.
