Icon of the Virgin of Kazan

Tempera on board, cm 43 x 35

The so-called icon of the Virgin of Kazan dates back to 1552, when Tsar Ivan the Terrible led a victorious war campaign against the Tartars; the capital of the Tartar Khanate was Kazan', and in memory of the undertaking the Russians conceived a new Marian icon as ex-vows they named as the newly converted city to Orthodox Christianity.

The invention and the particular affection on the part of the Russian culture of the Marian icons is to be traced back to the height of the fifteenth century, when the Byzantine Empire of Constantinople fell into Turkish-Ottoman hands (29 May 1453). Russia began to consider itself Third Rome and legitimate continuation of the legacy of the Eastern Empire no longer existing.

The icon incorporates the iconographic lesson of the ancient Byzantine eikones, always showing the Virgin and Child variously portrayed in a gesture of blessing. The types of Marian icons differed in Virgin Odighitria, "showing the correct way", ie the Son (while indicating it with the index), Aghiosoritissa, ie the Madonna of Supplications depicted alone and with a scroll of prayer, and finally Eleousa, of Mercy, portrayed while showing a more tenderly transported feeling. In the present icon the ancient Byzantine memory is clearly evident not only in the oriental maphorion of the Virgin, but above all in the dress of the Child, dressed in the Byzantine loros, the leading dress of the emperors. Next to the nimbus of the Virgin are the two acronyms in Greek letters Mather Theou, ie 'Mother of God'. The precious embroideries carved in racemes, volutes and very fine geometric decorations spread over the entire height of the table accentuate the preciousness of the tempera.

The specifically Marian icons, which, unlike the other figures of the Saints, were initially designed precisely to satisfy the Emperors' request for protection, renew their functionality in this work, converting it no longer to the protection of porphyrogens, but to the individual one of the individual faithful.
