Painter of landscapes and animals. 19th century French school.
Pupil of Léon Cogniet and Charles Jacques.
In 1857, he obtained the second grand prize of Rome with his painting: Jesus and the Samaritan woman. He had already exhibited in 1855 a subject inspired by Victor Hugo. But he did not linger in this genre and applied himself to painting animals, especially dogs. In his paintings he showed his “love for animals” and his wonderful knowledge of their character. He won a third medal in 1872, a second medal in 1883 and a silver medal in 1889.
In particular, he painted works preserved at the Musée du Château de Chantilly: “Le duc d'Orléans chassant à courre au bosquet de Sylvie” (1841) and “Hallali du cerf dans l’étang de Sylvie” (hunting of the Duc d’Aumale in 1880).
