Italy, late 19th century
Our gouache depicts the Duomo of Florence's Santa Maria del Fiore cathedral from the east, on a clear, calm day.
A souvenir of the Grand Tour
The iconography of Florentine architecture is a theme rarely tackled by 19th-century Italian artists in this format. Mostly intended for the English and French, these small gouaches were intended to be taken to neighbouring countries as a souvenir of the trip to Italy. There is a whole production linked to this trip, such as small bronzes, marble busts, etc. Our gouache is particularly interesting because of its format and the simplicity of its composition, which make it very romantic.
