Antoine Van Dyck, born in 1559 and died in 1641, was a Flemish Baroque painter and engraver. He painted many portraits and was the principal court painter of England. Cornelis Martinus Vermeulen, a 17th century Flemish engraver (1644-1708), trained in the workshop of Peeter Clouwet, built his reputation on his engraved portraits and various book illustrations. Maria Luissa de Tassis belongs to the Antwerp branch of the family that developed Europe's first postal system. She was around twenty years old at the time of this portrait.
