"African Mask - Dogon Kanaga - Early 20th Century"
Very old Kanaga Dogon mask from Mali with superb patina of old use. Numerous original repairs. The Kanaga mask was used by initiates of the Awa society in dances that symbolized the creation of the world during funeral ceremonies. During these dances, the dancer repeatedly hit the ground with the top of the mask, which is why the ancient masks that were really used during these rituals are often repaired with pieces of wood and animal tendons. The top of the cross is surmounted by a very stylized primordial couple, an iron point is planted on the top of the mask at the back. Wood, pigments, animal tendons, iron
