"Oratory From The Louis XIV Period With Crucifixion Scene In Marquetry, Circa 1700"
Superb oak oratory from the Louis XIV period. The lower part forming a drop-leaf desk, has a door with its original hinges and rests on a platform. In the upper part, the pediment is formed by an exceptional scene of crucifixion in marquetry, remarkably executed, representing Christ on the cross with at his feet, the virgin bride in prayer and Saint John. The entire scene is topped by a crowned sky, retaining a curtain drape. The marquetry panel is inserted into two classic columns. This type of oratory was placed in the rooms of manors and castles and served as a private chapel, France, late 17th century - early 18th century.
