Oftentimes nymphs can be found at the edge of the water; this is what Desenfans represented. Slightly leaning forward with one foot resting on a tree stump, Ondine is stepping into the water.
Desenfans' had a great sense for reality, here to be seen through the suppleness of motion and her soft focus trough wards the water she is about to step into.
Desenfans was a Belgian sculptor and studied at the académie royale des beaux-arts in Brussels and was amongst others pupil of Eugène Simonis (1810-1893). He is mainly known for his monumental creations for public commissions, as well as his mythological and allegorical creations.
This bronze has a red-brown patina and is signed “Albert Desenfans”.
