Grandson of the painter of ruins Hubert-Robert (1733-1808), Marius Hubert-Robert has a much more modern and lively approach to painting which he expresses through his numerous travels around the world, particularly in the United States and Canada, but also in Africa (Maghreb and Egypt), Greece, Lebanon, Syria and OiaIndochina thanks to the patronage of the Astor family. He also collaborated with the newspaper L'Illustration (circa 1930-1938). He exhibited notably at the Salon des Indépendants, at the French Artists, at the Société Nouvelle des Beaux Arts, at the Salon d'Hiver and on numerous occasions at the Charpentier gallery in Paris.
Our painting depicts a view of Santorini from the coastal town of Oia. The same shot was immortalized around 1925 by Greek photographer Nelly Sougioultzóglou-Seraïdári (1899-1998), better known as Nelly's. See last photo.
