Hamsa-shaped kendi, richly decorated, probably from the kilns of Si Satchanalai or Sawankhalok, 16th century. Kendi were used for a wide variety of purposes in addition to their main function as a pouring or drinking vessel. In Southeast Asia, they were important ritual vessels used in ceremonies such as weddings etc. Hamsa is a swan or a goose, it is the mount of the creator god Brahmâ. It is a symbol of purity, detachment, divine knowledge, cosmic breath and supreme spiritual accomplishment. Provenance: Estate of the collector and art dealer Claude de Marteau.
