Henri Charles De Serres, a student of Rudder, began at the Salon of 1846. Some of his paintings are in the Coutances and Rennes Museums. Our painting went on sale at Drouot on May 23, 1941 (Benesit). The painting is signed lower left with the monogram SR and dated 1852, countersigned on the back of the canvas and on a crosspiece of the stretcher. Original blackened wooden frame with gilded fillet and carved on the ogee.
