Fernand HERBO, painter born in Orchies in 1905 and died in Honfleur in 1995. He moved to Montmartre at a very young age and met Maurice de Vlaminck and Emile Othon Friesz. In 1938, he left Paris and settled in Honfleur. His remarkable work dedicated to the sea, to boats, to ports earned him the appointment of official painter of the Navy in 1944. His meeting with Kathia Granoff gave him another dimension, especially as this gallery owner introduced the general public to the Seine estuary school. The Eugène Boudin museum in Honfleur preserves some of his works and a room bears his name. It is also present at the Georges Pompidou museum. Fernand HERBO left an immense, authentic work in keeping with the reality of his century. He knew how to show industrial beauty through factories, tugboats, barges and even steam trains. The force of his captivating painting carries us into his world. This beautiful watercolor on paper annotated on the back “La place du Tertre in the 1930s” is an early work dating from his Montmartre period. It is signed by the artist's hand at the bottom left of the composition.Dimensions: At sight height 15 cm. Width 21 cm (28 cm x 34 cm with its frame).
