He is one of the founding artists of Art Deco. His training was that of a painter, but from the 1910s he began a career as an interior decorator. At the Salon d'Automne of 1912, he presented, in collaboration with the sculptor Raymond Duchamp-Villon and the painters Marie Laurencin and Roger de la Fresnaye, La Mauison Cubiste which caused a scandal and established André Mare as a decorator and Cubist artist.
