"Rare Sewing Machine - Manufacture De Mennecy - Soft Porcelain - Ep. 18th Century - Louis XV"
The thimble is a small object into which the tip of the finger is inserted to protect it from the sewing needle, usually the middle or ring finger. Thimbles are generally made of metal and stitched on the outside. But there are various kinds of thimbles in various metals, leather, ceramic, porcelain, rubber, wood, glass or plastic and silicone. Thimbles can be more or less worked, painted, engraved or chiselled. They can completely cover the finger with a frustoconical or cylindrical shape or be no wider than a ring and worn like a ring on the tip of the finger. SOFT PORCELAIN White background with polychrome decoration of a flower garland topped with the inscription “FRIENDSHIP GUIDES ME”. Purple net at the edge. Dimensions: High. 2.2 cm - Diam. 1.8 Cm, Brand(s): NIL, Condition: PERFECT CONDITION, Period: 18th century - LOUIS XV, Observation(s): minor wear from use. In sewing, the thimble serves as a cover to protect a finger when using a sewing needle. It allows you to “push” the needle into thick fabrics and to receive the needle when sewing by hand.
