"Still Life Signed Pierre Jouffroy"
This large oil on canvas by Pierre Jouffroy (1912-2000), measuring 72 cms x 99 cms, evokes, as often in his works, a table evoking the work of the baker. Magnified by chiaroscuro scholars, this canvas presents a single note of color, the red present in the weaving of the flour sack. Born September 21, 1912 in Voujeaucourt in a family of 14 children, he was the thirteenth. From 1931, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris where he was noticed. The following year, he presented “Une fête à Voujeaucourt” at the Salon des Artistes Comtois in Montbéliard. From 1933, he was regularly present at the Salon des Annonciades in Pontarlier and in 1941, he won the silver medal at the Salon des Artistes français for “The Painter's Workshop”, an obvious tribute to Courbet. In 1942 his “Scene from familiar life” representing his mother in the kitchen won him the gold medal. In 1944, he won the art critic's prize for a “Still Life with a Gray Goose”, thus gaining his first recognition in a genre in which he would become a master. In 1946, Pierre Jouffroy joined the Salon Jury of French artists. He set up his workshop on rue des Halles in Montbéliard. In 1955, he acquired the Château de Belvoir (25), painted in his time by Courbet, of which Pierre Jouffroy would become a recognized specialist. The artist, a great defender of heritage, undertook the restoration of the building while continuing his artistic career until 2000, the year of his death. The castle houses the painter's works. His works have been acquired by several museums: Strasbourg, Nancy, Besançon, Dunkirk, Pontarlier, Gray, etc. They can also be seen in this Belvoir castle to which he helped restore its splendor.
