Lithographie originale d’Abel Aubert du Petit-Thouars de l’île Floreana, îles Galapagolas réalisée lors du Voyage autour du Monde de la Vénus.
Son champ d’activité principal se situe dans l’océan Pacifique, où la Restauration et la monarchie de Juillet, renouant avec la tradition des grands voyages maritimes du XVIIIe siècle, envoient plusieurs missions de caractère scientifique et commercial. Il est capitaine de vaisseau en 1836 et fait le tour du monde sur la frégate la Vénus jusqu’en 1839, voyage auquel participe Urbain Dortet de Tessan, ingénieur hydrographe. De retour en France, il conseille au gouvernement l’annexion des îles Marquises, en partie afin de l’utiliser comme lieu de déportation, proposition agréée par François Guizot qui le nomme au commandement de la station navale du Pacifique.
