"Allegorical Sculpture Lady With Lotus In Marble And Alabaster - Art Nouveau 1900"
Important polychrome sculpture lady with Lotus, in yellow Siena marble, alabaster and onyx from Liberty Art period around 1900. The subject is of extreme orientalist inspiration and represents a graceful young lady draped and enveloped in an aura holding in her hand a sacred lotus flower that she contemplates. This flower, an allegorical metaphor for beauty and the divine, particularly in Eastern religions, is also the symbol of rebirth in ancient Egypt. The sculptor transcribed in marble the fall of the fabric, the wavering fabric, the volutes of the drapery, completing them with subtle details of ornamental flowers and leaves engraved in particular on the bottom of the sleeves. The diaphanous shoulders have the particularity of being bare, unobstructed, and the fall of this "kimono" dress allows the slender feet, set in strappy sandals, of this extreme orientalist "geisha" to shine through. It rests on an ornate onyx base. Italian school, unsigned to compare with the works of Guiglielmo Pugi
