This chased bronze okimono with dark patina represents a fox or kitsune in Japanese.
It is signed HANEHIROYA sei 羽廣屋製 (made by the HANEHIRO workshop).
The kitsune is an important animal in Japanese culture and mythology. The subject of numerous stories, myths and legends, the kitsune is sometimes an evil being, sometimes a beneficial one. Interestingly, Japanese culture is the only one whose myths report cases of foxes possessing humans.
The subject's eyes are made of glass paste, and the entire fur is chiseled. With head raised and mouth open, it seems to be scanning a prey perched on a tree.
