"Large Japanese Buddhist Sculpture - Edo Japan"
Large Buddhist temple sculpture in polychrome carved wood and sulphide eyes. This is a representation of Kyobon Hadai who is the 9th Buddhist saint (Arhat or Arakan in Japanese). The sculpture is in 3 parts: base, body and halo. The halo appears to have been restored. Japan, Edo era. Gavampati.僑梵波提尊者(Kyobon-hadai, Qiaofanboti) was a disciple of Shakyamuni. Gavampati and the son of a setthi (merchant) of Varanasi. He became a monk and quickly became an arhat. While staying at Anjanavana, the Buddha also went there, accompanied by a multitude of monks. During the night, a major flood of the Sarabhu River (one of the five "great rivers" spoken of in the sutras) threatened to flood the place where the monks were sleeping and the Buddha sent Gavampati to stop the flood. By the power of his thought he pushed back the flood which formed like a mountain in the distance. He is present at the Great Assembly of Chapter I of the Lotus Sutra. This collector's item is exceptional and very calming. Do not hesitate to contact me for more photos.
