The Bété, living mainly in western Ivory Coast, use masks whose style has been influenced by the gla glaé mask society of the Wobé and Guéré populations, part of the Krou cultural group. These traditions were transmitted to them by the Nyabwa. These masks, of warrior origin but also involved in conflict resolution, are considered sacred and are worn with amulets to protect their wearer against witchcraft. They are made available to the chief in order to strengthen his power through the exercise of customary justice.
