Object description :

"Katzbalger De Lansquenet "
The typology of this sword poses no problem: It is a Katzbalger, Lansquenet's short sword.
The shape of its handle, which differs from the models considered typical, is a rather reassuring thing, as is the relatively rustic finish, since the models made in the 19th century generally scrupulously respect the typology, and are rather finely worked..
The only thing which bothers me a little for this weapon is its weight: it weighs in fact 1.9 kg which is quite heavy, for my taste, but its balance is correct since the balance point is located 9.5 cm from the edge of the guard.
It must be remembered, however, that some lansquenets were colossi, sometimes measuring more than 2 meters and weighing more than 120 or 130 kg, so it is possible that such a massive character would feel comfortable even with a heavy weapon. Some Swiss Morgenstern from the Zurich Museum, for example, can only be used by people with particularly enormous hands.
The length of the grip, which is longer than the usual models, corresponds to a very large hand, so one would be inclined to conclude in this sense. BLADE: after a ricasso of 7 cm, it has a double-edged part. These edges are beveled around a central part in the shape of a very shallow fuller, like on some much older swords. The end of the blade is rounded, as on almost all Katzbalgers.
The forge is quite rustic, with traces which may be those of manufacturing hammering or signs of subsequent sharpening.
Length of the blade = 69 cm, width at the ricasso = 4.9 cm, thickness at the ricasso = 4.3 mm
GUARD: This is the guard in the shape of the letter S typical of lansquenets swords. The two quillons are twisted, and they end with a flattened button. In the center we find a large triangular shield, forged in a rather crude manner.
POMMEL : it is spherical, shaped like petals, with a central ring. This shape of pommel is found on other swords from the same period, see the engraving which shows a lansquenet.
GRIP : It is made of wood, covered with leather using the technique known as "leather on string". A ring at each end of the rocket reinforces it and a middle ring ensures grip. The leather is old and hardened. it is always difficult to say that it is indeed the original leather, but it is entirely possible.
As Katzbalgers are very rare on the market, and generally very expensive, this one deserves our attention. I cannot guarantee 100% its period, mainly because of its weight, but the rusticity of the model makes me conclude (maybe Iam wrong?) that there is a high probability of a simple model, but original and not a 19th century manufacture.
I'll let everyone form their own opinion.
