Alfred Manessier was first a figurative painter, then who evolved towards abstraction at the end of the 1940s. He is considered one of the major figures of the new school of Paris. The nature and landscapes of the North that he loves hold an important place in his production. His work has been awarded numerous international prizes (including the Venice Biennale in 1962) and is featured in numerous museums. The work presented is a landscape of Normandy, characteristic of the pivotal period between figuration and abstraction of the 1940s. It is signed and dated 1944 lower right, and titled on the back "Landscape of Normandy".
