Olinde and Sophronia is a subject taken from Jerusalem Delivered, an epic poem by Tasso.
Olinde and Sophronia: ...Aladdin, tyrant of Jerusalem or Solyme, informed of the approach of the Christians, prepares to repel them. Through the advice of the enchanter Ismen, he removed an image of the Virgin particularly dear to Christians. But the sacred simulacrum disappears from the mosque where it was transported. To save the people of Jerusalem from the consequences of Aladdin's wrath, a Christian virgin, Sophronie, declared herself guilty of theft: she was going to die in the flames, next to Olinde, her lover, when the warrior arrived to the tyrant's aid. Clorinde, who obtains the pardon of the unfortunate couple. This episode, where Tasso displayed all his talent in the art of interest and emotion, is in no way linked to the rest of the poem...
