"Rumeli Hisari Fortress In Istanbul. Oil On Canvas XIX Era Unsigned."
Magnificent oil on canvas from the 19th century. It represents the Rumeli Hisari fortress, located north of the Bebek district of Istanbul, Turkey. It gave the name to the district which surrounds it on a hill in the Ruméliote part of the Bosphorus. The view is animated by figures on boats in the foreground. the canvas is in good condition, small scratch in the sky and some small wear but very little. It is not signed. I am not certain about the author, but I found various documents suggesting that it could be Amadéo Préziosi. In particular a lithograph which uses the same composition, sold to Drouot in a collection of lithographs. ( view the photo ). We know few oils by this artist who is rather famous for his drawings and watercolors. The artist's sometimes somewhat caricatured way of treating his characters leads me to think that it could be him. The canvas alone measures 36 cm x 28.5 cm. It is presented in a splendid 19th century frame in perfect condition measuring 47 cm x 37 cm. Rare.
