François-Marie Firmin-Girard, born May 29, 1838 in Poncin (Ain) and died January 8, 1921 in Montluçon (Allier), was a versatile painter, specializing in painting history, religious subjects, genre scenes , portraits, landscapes, still lifes and flowers. He moved to Paris at a very young age and entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1854, working in the workshops of Charles Gleyre and Jean-Léon Gérôme. In 1861, he won the second Prix de Rome and established his workshop on Boulevard de Clichy in Paris. From 1859, he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon and the Salon des artistes français, receiving numerous medals. His style varied between realism and impressionism, but it was always characterized by a beautiful use of light. He was renowned for his ability to paint a variety of works, ranging from historical paintings to genre scenes, including landscapes and still lifes. Among his notable works are "Saint-Sébastien", "After the Ball", "Flower Merchant", "The Betrothed", "La Terrasse à Onival" and "Le Quai aux fleurs". Firmin-Girard was highly regarded by the Parisian public of his time, although some critics, including Émile Zola, considered him a conventional artist. He was one of the first to adopt the resort of Onival, where he had a villa built around 1875. He produced numerous paintings of the surroundings of Onival. In 1878, the writer and art critic Louis Énault compared the British artist Frederick Goodall to Firmin-Girard, emphasizing the extraordinary strength and truth of the smallest details in both artists.
