"Tronchin Table, Directoire Period"
Architect's table called La Tronchin in mahogany. One large drawer with removable shelf, two side pulls, large mobile rack tray. Leather top edged with gilding. Sheath feet, bronze shoes, on casters. Buffer varnish. Around 1795. Closed: height 80 cm, width 89 cm, depth 54 cm. This type of rack-mounted reading table, known as "à la Tronchin", appeared during the reign of Louis XVI. Invented in 1777 by Louis DUFOUR who gave it the name of a famous Geneva doctor, Théodore Tronchin (1709-1781), with the aim of being able to work both sitting and standing.
