Pair of candlesticks or torches
Gilded bronze (6 elements)
Dimensions : H. 19 (cm.)
Paris, late 18th century
A pair of small torches or candlesticks, resting on a base finely chased with palmettes and ivy. The fluted shaft supports a spigot decorated with guilloche friezes. Very fine chasing and high quality of the 6 elements.
A transitional model
Neoclassical in form, this model follows the patterns developed around 1770 by many ornamentalists and disseminated by collections of engravings. However, they express the evolution in taste between the Directoire, Consulate and early Empire periods through the use of different friezes, for example the different shape of the binet and the more complex lines of the shaft.
Condition report: gilding with gold chloride, a later stem, excellent condition as regards wear.
