Pompeian Narcissus
Bronze with antique patina
Dimensions : H. 13 (cm) excluding base
Probably Italy, second half of the 19th century
This Narcissus is depicted standing, slightly splayed, with his right hand pointing downwards, holding his drapery which reveals his near nudity. The head is typical of antique treatment. This small bronze rests on a modern onyx base. It is a remake of a bronze now conserved in Naples.
A souvenir of the Grand Tour
Iconography linked to archaeological discoveries was a popular theme for Italian artists in the 19th century. Mostly intended for the English and French, these small bronzes were intended to be taken to neighbouring countries as a souvenir of the trip to Italy. There is a whole production linked to this trip, such as small mosaics, marble busts and so on.
Local bronze-founders, in Naples for the Pompeian finds, and in Rome and Florence for the Etruscan finds, produced a profusion of these models.
Condition report: very good patina
