In western Ivory Coast, the Bété use masks whose style was influenced by the gla glaé mask society of the Wobé and Guéré populations, together forming the Krou cultural group. These traditions were taught to them by the Nyabwa. Although of warrior origin, these masks also play a role in conflict resolution and are considered sacred. They are worn with amulets to protect the wearer against witchcraft. They are made available to the chief to strengthen his power through the application of customary justice.
