"Circle Of Philipp Ferdinand De Hamilton (1664 - 1750) Hunting Scenes "
Circle of Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton (Brussels, 1664 - Wien, 1750)
Hunting scenes
Oil on canvas, 46  x 66
The current pair of canvases offers a fascinating return from the hunt, full of an elegantly dampened triumphalism. In the first painting a group of men in bright red tunics hints or is already intensely engaged, as the rider in the center, to play some trumpet call, punctuated by the slow rhythm of the horses that accompany them. A group of beagle dogs flank the hunters, crossing a stream of light to which the artist brings only the vitreous texture to the paws of the animals, bright in a blue disk of loose water. The subtle and vibrant brushwork is enriched by a widespread play of light points that animate the mantle of the horses and the trumpet above which is laid a pair of hares, intentionally illuminated so that the viewer can admire the results of the hunt. In the second canvas the horses are embellished with rich harnesses, embellished with animal fur or fabrics of a bright blue gold fringed. Hares and hunting dogs are proposed, this time tied to a cart, the other of the greyhound breed. The natural scenery becomes more spectacular, introducing the artist to a distant sunset that begins to chart clouds in the distance. The formal composition and the refined aesthetic quality achieved through the capillary narration of figurative details allow to bring the work to the circle of Philipp Ferdinand de Hamilton, Born in Brussels as the son of the Scottish painter James de Hamilton, who taught him to paint. From 1705 to 1750 he was court painter in Vienna, and is known for hunting scenes as his brother Johann Georg. He died in Vienna in 1750. You can compare these works with Before the Falcon Hunt, private collection and other and other paintings by de Hamilton depicting horses or hunting animals, in which there is a strong similarity in the use of colors, brushstrokes and anatomical construction of animals.
