Jean Noël ALEXANDRE 1752-1834 French painter, student of Joseph VERNET. Officially named marine painter by Louis XVI in 1777. Part of the scientific expedition to Lower California with the astronomer Jean CHAPPE in 1739. He regularly painted works ranging from pair, one of which is kept at the LOUVRE museum, these paintings are characterized by their large format and the opposing subjects. This is the case with ours today: “shipwreck on rough seas / anchorage on calm seas”.
