"Painting: The Judgment Of Zaleucus"
The judgment of King ZALEUCUS oil on panel first third of the 17th century. The son of King ZALEUCUS was found guilty of kidnapping (punishable at the time by gouging out his eyes), to soften his sentence the king decided to lose his eye and thus prevent his son from becoming blind. Northern European School. Our work retraces this scene in a public square, where we see the king sitting on his throne and his son below undergoing his enucleation. (Rear frame in gilded wood)
